The ultimate problem is money and leadership. Open source lacks too much of both. In the end, proprietary and vertical systems tend to dominate. Interestingly, it looks like we are the verge of a new explosion in such system thanks to mobile. Besides the dominate Android, iOS and Windows, new systems are on the horizon: Tizen, FirefoxOS, webOS, Sailfish and others.
